YouTube is launching a new feature, ‘Thumbnail Test and Compare,’ for all its channels in the upcoming weeks. This tool allows content creators to test three different thumbnails on any video to identify the most effective one based on viewer engagement.
After about two weeks of data collection, the platform will display the various thumbnails to different viewers to determine which thumbnail generated the highest ‘watch timeshare.’
The results will be categorized as follows:
- Winner: This label is assigned to a thumbnail that substantially outperforms the others in watch time. YouTube will automatically apply the winning thumbnail to the video.
- Preferred: This result suggests that a thumbnail likely performed better than others but with less statistical certainty.
- None: The original thumbnail will remain in place when no thumbnail outshines others.
If a thumbnail does not conclusively outperform others, creators can manually set it for their video.
