During a Supreme Court hearing, the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, expressed his concerns regarding a proxy petition filed in 2022 aimed at media regulation, which lacked genuine involvement from the petitioners in Chakwal.
The Chief Justice’s frustration was evident as he queried the attorney, Haider Waheed, about the recurrent appearance of clients from Chakwal, questioning the motives behind these filings.
Chief Justice Isa criticized the frivolous nature of such lawsuits, noting that similar actions in foreign jurisdictions could result in serious legal consequences, including heavy defamation penalties that could financially cripple individuals. His dissatisfaction escalated when the petitioners opted to withdraw their case, underscoring deeper issues related to accountability and honesty within the nation.
Lamenting the prevailing culture, Chief Justice Isa remarked on the collective role in societal degradation, questioning why there was a pervasive fear of speaking the truth. He also highlighted the prevalent unchecked criticism, pointing out the discrepancy between the ease of casting aspersions and the scarcity of truthful discourse. These comments underscore his deep-seated concern with Pakistan’s legal and public ethics state.
