WhatsApp’s latest update introduces “voice chats,” allowing users to join group audio conversations seamlessly. Unlike traditional group calls, this feature mimics Discord’s style. Within the chat interface, a waveform icon signals the availability of this feature.
Activating it presents a microphone and a red “X”, but doesn’t ring for others—instead, a banner shows active participants, inviting others to join. Like typical WhatsApp messages, these chats are end-to-end encrypted. If inactive for an hour, the chat ends.
Only Android beta users have access, but broader availability is expected soon.
