The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) has released an official statement to clarify its role amidst recent confusion over load-shedding responsibilities in various Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) cities.
WAPDA has stated in response to inaccuracies in media reports that mistakenly attributed the responsibility for power outages to WAPDA instead of the appropriate entities, Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) and Tribal Electric Supply Company (TESCO).
WAPDA highlighted that its jurisdiction and responsibilities have been significantly redefined since 2007. The authority now focuses on constructing and operating dams and hydroelectric power stations and providing affordable hydroelectric power to the national grid.
The management of broader electricity-related issues, including load shedding, lies with Generation Companies (GENCOs), the Central Power Purchasing Authority (CPPA), the National Transmission and Dispatch Company (NTDC), and various distribution companies, which have been managing these responsibilities for the past 17 years.
WAPDA emphasized that, unlike other distribution companies, PESCO and TESCO operate independently of WAPDA’s administrative control.
The statement also advised media outlets to accurately represent WAPDA’s scope and duties in their reporting, particularly concerning issues related to load shedding and electricity distribution in KP. This clarification aims to correct public misunderstandings and ensure accountability and responsibilities are clearly understood and properly assigned.
