The US State Department warned of action if foreign terrorists reassemble in Afghanistan, saying it might become a refuge for militants.
State Department Spokesperson Ned Price highlighted the concerns during a news briefing after an attack on the Pakistan Embassy in Kabul.
The Taliban failed in counterterrorism, the spokesperson stated.
“We have counterterrorism capabilities in the region that don’t rely on the Taliban. In recent months, we demonstrated these capabilities by murdering al-Qaida emir Ayman al-Zawahiri, making good on President Biden’s promise since the withdrawal of military forces from Afghanistan last year that we will take action if international terrorists reassemble in Afghanistan. We’ll defend our interests.”
Ned Price said the US wants to prevent terrorists from using Afghanistan to attack Pakistan.
“Others have been active, too. TTP was discussed. We’re resolved to engage with our regional neighbors, particularly Pakistan, to combat terrorism in the area and beyond.”
The official said Pakistan is a crucial security partner in many ways.
Pakistan receives grants from the International Military Education and Training program, which provides professional military education, operational and technical courses, and skills courses that improve institutional capacity and resource management.
“It strengthens our countries’ military cooperation.”
