The United States has issued a security alert for its citizens in Pakistan, urging them to avoid large gatherings and stay updated by monitoring local media.
The travel advisory alert, issued by the US embassy in Islamabad and consulates general in Lahore, Karachi, and Peshawar, responds to protests in various Pakistani cities expected to continue until October 7.
The advisory predicts large crowds, traffic congestion, and a heightened security presence, including more checkpoints, which could disrupt local mobile and internet services in the area. It cautions that intercity travel and traffic issues may persist beyond the stated date.
The US mission emphasized the unpredictable nature of protests, noting that even peaceful gatherings might escalate into violence. It highlighted that internet and mobile phone service outages are typical during such disturbances.
Additionally, the alert advises US mission personnel that their movement might be restricted due to changing security or traffic conditions. US citizens are advised to exercise caution, leave immediately if they encounter unexpected large gatherings or demonstrations, maintain a low profile, and remain vigilant.
The mission also reminds citizens always to carry identification, cooperate with local authorities, and stay conscious of their surroundings to ensure their safety.
