To prevent encirclement, Ukrainian forces have pulled back from Avdiivka, a critical city at the front, allowing Russia a significant victory, especially after Kyiv’s failed summer counter-offensive.
Russia aimed to seize Avdiivka for months, achieving its largest territorial gain since taking Bakhmut last May.
Conversely, Oleksandr Syrsky, the new military leader, on Saturday detailed on Facebook the strategic repositioning of Ukrainian units to stronger defensive lines, highlighting Ukrainian troops’ efforts and sacrifices in causing substantial Russian casualties. Since taking charge on February 8, Syrsky’s primary goal has been protecting soldiers and avoiding encirclement.
The eastern front of Ukraine faces growing pressures, worsened by a delay in a crucial $60 billion US military aid package, stalled by Congressional disagreements.
General Oleksandr Tarnavsky, in charge of the Avdiivka sector, acknowledged a tactical retreat to more favourable defensive positions. He faced daunting challenges, including a marked disadvantage in artillery firepower from Russian forces, so he deemed the withdrawal necessary.
Before this move, Tarnavsky reported the capture of Ukrainian soldiers by Russian forces. The battle for Avdiivka, an industrial hub near Donetsk under Russian control, ranks as one of the most fiercely contested, reminiscent of the lengthy struggle for Bakhmut.
Avdiivka housed about 34,000 residents pre-war but has been heavily damaged, leaving only a small population. Its capture holds strategic value for Moscow, potentially disrupting Ukrainian artillery operations against Donetsk.
Located in the Donetsk region, Avdiivka’s importance grew after a brief takeover by pro-Russian forces in July 2014 and has been a focus of contention since Russia’s unrecognized annexation in 2022.
This strategic withdrawal by Ukraine follows a fruitless summer counter-offensive, with Russian forces gaining the upper hand as Ukraine faces replenishment and ammunition challenges.
