A U.S. Army intelligence analyst has admitted to selling military secrets to China in exchange for money.
According to an international news report, Corbin Schultz was arrested at Fort Campbell, a military base on the Tennessee border, in March of this year. He faces charges of disclosing national defense secrets, selling unlicensed defense materials and technical data, and bribing a public official.
The U.S. Department of Justice revealed that Schultz, who held high-level security clearance, confessed to these charges. He also admitted to participating in a scheme to export unlicensed defense items, which he sold to China for financial gain.
Schultz sold sensitive national secrets to a Hong Kong resident for $42,000, suspecting that the individual was connected to the Chinese government. Before his arrest, Schultz had sent dozens of sensitive military documents, including information related to the Russia-Ukraine war, Chinese military strategies, and U.S. military satellite data.
FBI Executive Assistant Director Robert Wells emphasized that governments like China are aggressively targeting U.S. military personnel and national security information. He assured that all resources would be used to protect classified information from foreign adversaries.
Assistant Attorney General Matthew G. Olsen stated that Schultz’s conspiracy to transmit national defense information to a foreign individual has significantly jeopardized national security. Following his confession, Schultz could face several decades in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for January 23, 2025.
