Two people were killed, and eight others were injured when a container toppled at the Torkham border crossing.
Officials say the incident occurred when the truck driver with a container loaded with export goods went to the border guards for a gate pass to cross to Afghanistan while the stranded vehicle started moving and crashing into the steel grill fixed along the exit point, dislodging the loaded container from the vehicle.
At least 10 people were crushed, including an Afghan toddler and an FC member. Rescuers lifted the container while rescuing the injured, who were transferred to Landi Kotal hospital.
Four badly injured Afghans were sent to Peshawar, hospital sources stated.
The event halted border traffic for hours.
Transporters have long demanded an assistant driver or cleaner be permitted to stay with the vehicle while the driver gets a gate pass, fearing theft or accident.
The ban on assistance drivers or cleaners was established for security grounds, as most transporters lacked legitimate travel documents.
Pakistani officials urged Afghan authorities multiple times to widen the border crossing point by establishing two distinct entry and exit points to reduce traffic congestion. Afghan authorities opposed the idea, saying no new work could be done at the zero point until the two nations settled their decades-old border dispute.
