Former President Donald Trump’s Fox News town hall in Iowa garnered higher ratings than the CNN debate featuring former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
According to Nielsen Media’s data, Trump’s event attracted 4.4 million viewers, outperforming Haley and DeSantis’ debate by 64%. The debate, which lasted two hours at Drake University in Des Moines, drew an audience of 2.7 million, indicating a clear preference among viewers for Trump’s town hall.
The viewership for Trump’s town hall also surpassed the Haley-DeSantis debate in the crucial 25 to 54 age demographic. During his appearance, Trump hinted at selecting a potential running mate and criticized President Biden’s Middle East policies. He also revisited controversies from his previous presidential campaigns, including allegations of collusion with Russia and claims against his political opponents. When questioned about seeking retribution against his adversaries, Trump emphasized making the country successful rather than pursuing retribution.
Political Dynamics and Campaign Strategies
The debate without Trump led many to view it as a second-place contest, overshadowed by his continued influence in GOP politics. Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie’s suspension of his campaign and remarks against Haley and DeSantis further highlighted the challenging dynamics within the Republican primary race.
DeSantis, focusing his campaign efforts in Iowa, trails slightly behind Haley in the RealClear polling average despite his previous success in a debate against California Gov. Gavin Newsom, which drew 4.75 million viewers. As the political landscape evolves, the race for the Republican nomination continues to be a focal point of interest and speculation.
