Two young boys and a man died after they fell into a deep submersible pump well in Karachi, as reported by police.
The incident occurred Sunday evening in a residential compound near Fawara Chowk in Garden East.
Eyewitnesses reported that the boys were playing on the well’s lid, which collapsed under their weight, plunging them into the well. The victims, aged 8 and 12, fell to where a submersible water pump was located.
To rescue the children, the residents enlisted a local plumber. However, he too perished when the rope supporting him broke, according to local accounts.
Following the authorities’ alert, rescue teams promptly arrived at the scene. However, they faced challenges due to the well’s narrow opening.
Both children, identified as Badar and Talha, along with the plumber, were retrieved in critical condition but were subsequently pronounced dead.
Rescuers also safely extracted one of their colleagues trapped inside the well.
Residents said the plumber had warned of insufficient oxygen upon entering the well. He had secured the children to himself with a rope, instructing those above to pull them up, but the rope snapped during the attempt.
