Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, seeking a medical exemption from the personal appearance in the Toshakhana case, a federal capital sessions court reserved judgment on Tuesday.
A sessions court in Islamabad had set February 7 for filing the case’s charges; however, when the judge resumed the hearing today, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader’s attorneys filed a new petition asking for the client’s exemption from appearing.
In November of last year, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) submitted the reference, asking the court to pursue criminal charges against the leader of the PTI for allegedly lying to officials about the gifts he received from foreign dignitaries while serving as prime minister.
For the offenses listed under Sections 167 (corrupt practice) and 173 (making or publishing a false statement or declaration) of the Elections Act of 2017, the ECP had asked that the PTI leader be found guilty.
According to the records, the state gifts were acquired from the Toshakhana for Rs 21.15 million, less than their assessed value of Rs 108 million.
The court ordered the PTI chairman on January 31 to provide surety bonds totaling Rs 20,000 to ensure his appearance today for the case’s indictment.
