Imran Khan, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, has penned a detailed account from his prison cell for The Telegraph, addressing the deep political rifts in Pakistan.
Nearly two years ago, Khan’s government was ousted through a vote of no confidence, which he claims was orchestrated by the military establishment. Since then, under the leadership of Gen Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, efforts to dismantle Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf (PTI), have intensified.
Khan describes widespread oppression, torture, and systematic denial of PTI’s electoral symbol. However, these tactics failed to suppress the party’s influence, as evidenced by the February 8, 2024, general elections. Despite lacking a unified electoral symbol, the electorate overwhelmingly supported PTI-endorsed independent candidates, defying the military’s narrative and prior accusations against PTI supporters.
The electoral outcome, which Khan views as a democratic retaliation against military dominance, was not accepted by the establishment. Instead, it led to further manipulation of electoral results, a practice Khan asserts was also evident in subsequent by-elections.
Today, Khan sees Pakistan at a critical juncture, with the public rejecting the state’s electoral manipulations and the continued mistreatment of PTI members. He criticizes the military leadership for unprecedented overt criticism and labels the government ineffective.
The state’s response has been to ramp up oppression and violence, not only against political activists but also journalists and human rights defenders. Additionally, a troubling campaign has been launched to undermine judicial independence, with judges facing harassment and their families threatened, leading to compromised trials.
Amidst this turmoil, six brave judges from the Islamabad High Court have taken a stand, writing a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan to highlight their harassment, marking a historic moment of judicial dissent.
Khan highlights the economic crises and political disenfranchisement that further isolate the state. He criticizes the reliance on the International Monetary Fund and calls for the restoration of the people’s mandate and the release of all political prisoners.
Despite the threats to his life, Khan remains undeterred, stating his readiness to face death over yielding to oppression. He holds Gen Asim Munir accountable for any harm that might come to him or his wife.
As the leader of PTI, Imran Khan continues to challenge the status quo from his cell. He is serving a sentence on controversial corruption charges and calling for a fundamental restoration of democratic and judicial processes in Pakistan.
