Islamabad police have filed a terrorism case against Sardar Akhtar Mengal, leader of the Balochistan National Party (BNP). Senate Joint Secretary Jamil Ahmed initiated the case at the Secretariat Police Station, implicating Mengal and five others.
The charges detail that Mengal, with five accomplices, attempted to enter the Senate Hall forcefully while armed. Meer Jahanzaib Mengal and Akhtar Nawaz reportedly assaulted security personnel during their attempt to enter the hall with weapons.
Previously, during a session that passed the 26th Constitutional Amendment, security removed Akhtar Mengal from the Senate gallery. He later stated to the media that a female security officer had ejected him from the gallery after a confrontation with dissident members of his party, which caused alarm among government ministers.
Recently, Senator Qasim Ronjo, a BNP dissenter, resigned from his Senate position.
On Sunday, Mengal demanded Ronjo and Senator Naseema Ehsan’s immediate resignations from the BNP-M following their support for the government’s amendment. He warned that failure to resign by the next day would result in their expulsion.
The two senators had supported the amendment, which passed with a two-thirds majority, securing 65 votes.
Earlier, Mengal expressed concerns about the disconnection between his party and its senators at Parliament House, saying, “We are here to find our senators. We’ve checked their lodges, but they are not there.”
This occurred as Pakistan’s federal cabinet, under Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, approved the draft for the 26th Constitutional Amendment.
