Syed Murad Ali Shah was re-elected as the Chief Minister of Sindh on Monday, achieving a significant victory over MQM-P’s Ali Khurshidi. In his third term as the province’s chief executive, Shah received 112 votes against Khurshidi’s 36 out of 148 total votes.
The election process began with the newly elected Speaker, Syed Owais Qadir Shah, outlining the voting procedure. Owais Shah, representing the PPP, had previously won the Speaker position in the Sindh Assembly, securing 111 votes against MQM-P’s Sofia Saeed, who received 36 votes, in a session attended by 157 assembly members.
This election followed the swearing-in of 147 newly elected members of the Sindh Assembly on Saturday. The Election Commission of Pakistan announced that the PPP led the provincial results with 84 seats, while MQM-P followed with 28 seats. Independent candidates, some affiliated with PTI, won 14 seats, and both the Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA) and Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) secured two seats each.
Notably, parties other than PPP and MQM-P opted to boycott the Chief Minister’s election process, leading to the absence of elected members from GDA, JI, and PTI-backed independents during the oath-taking session.
