Snapchat is rolling out its new “Footsteps” feature to all iOS users this week, expanding beyond its initial offering to Snapchat+ subscribers.
The company confirmed the feature on Monday. According to TechCrunch, the feature utilizes Snap Map to document and display users’ travels and show how much of the world they have explored.
Upon first use, Footsteps gathers data from Snaps stored in Memories to assess past travels.
It then uses real-time location data to generate personalized travel maps.
For activation, users must disable Ghost Mode on Snap Map. The feature is private by default, enabling only the user to see their movements. Additionally, users can disable tracking or erase their travel history at any time through their profile settings.
Snapchat’s enhancement of Snap Map distinguishes it from rivals like Instagram and TikTok. Instagram is developing a comparable “Friends Map.”
Snapchat also plans to make Footsteps available to Android users soon.
