On Friday, a six-year-old boy opened fire in an elementary school classroom in the eastern state of Virginia in the United States, seriously injuring a teacher.
According to the police, the incident took place at Richneck Elementary School in the coastal city of Newport News, and no students were injured in the shooting. The local police chief Steve Drew confirmed in a news conference that the individual responsible for the shooting was a six-year-old student who was now in police custody, adding that the incident was not an accidental shooting.
The shooting victim was a teacher in her 30s, and her injuries are believed to be life-threatening. The superintendent of schools, George Parker, expressed his shock and disheartenment over the incident and called for the community’s support to ensure that guns are not available to youth.
School shootings have become a major concern in the United States in recent years, and this incident is another example of this grave problem. In November 2022, seven university students were killed after violence struck two campuses in Idaho and Virginia. In May 2021, an 18-year-old gunman shot 19 children and two teachers dead in Uvalde, Texas.
The Texas shooting was the deadliest at a US grade school since a gunman killed 20 children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut, in December 2012. These incidents have led to widespread concern and call for stricter gun control laws in the United States.
According to the Gun Violence Archive database, there were an estimated 44,000 gun-related deaths in the United States last year. Approximately half of these deaths were due to murder cases, accidents, and self-defense, while the other half were suicides. The high number of gun-related deaths underscores the urgent need for more effective measures to address gun violence in the United States.
