On Monday, Sharjeel Inam Memon, Sindh, Senior Minister for Transport, Excise, Taxation, and Narcotics Control, and Information, called for an investigation into the financial practices of electricity supply companies to determine their profits.
Speaking to journalists, Memon accused K-Electric, HESCO, and SEPCO of constitutional violations. He highlighted that, per their agreement, K-Electric must allocate part of its revenue for network expansion and maintenance. However, Memon pointed out the company’s failure to maintain its infrastructure adequately, as evidenced by frequent feeder trips during minor weather changes.
Furthermore, Memon referenced a recent resolution by the Sindh Assembly that demanded that these companies improve their operations. In response, K-Electric claimed it had financial liabilities towards the government, which could potentially be offset against the government’s outstanding dues to them.
Memon criticized the electricity suppliers for removing Potential Metering Transformers (PMTs) in communities where only a fraction of residents were defaulters.
He also criticized the practice of issuing estimated bills rather than those based on actual meter readings, a method that violates established legal standards. Memon noted that when consumers sought bill corrections, officials coerced them into accepting instalment plans instead of adjusting the charges according to actual consumption.
