Disturbing claims have reemerged about John Riley, the celebrity dentist associated with The Beatles, suggesting possible abuse against band members John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.
The allegations, initially detailed in Craig Brown’s book “One Two Three Four: The Beatles in Time,” have resurfaced as fans revisit the band’s history for the 65th anniversary of their formation.
John Riley, a notable Harley Street dentist, treated all four Beatles during the early 1960s. Pattie Boyd, George Harrison’s ex-wife, described Riley’s practice of administering intravenous Valium to patients, often rendering them unconscious, regardless of the procedure’s necessity. She labelled the practice as “sinister” and recounted troubling incidents of Riley attempting to revive Harrison with slaps after administering heavy tranquillizers. “No one questioned it,” Boyd stated. “We would wake up not knowing what he had done.”

Beyond his dental duties, Riley’s charisma brought him close to the band, especially Harrison, with whom he developed a significant bond. This connection extended to Riley joining the band on their 1965 Bahamas trip for the filming of “Help!” However, Boyd expressed unease about Riley, especially in vulnerable situations, adding to the complex narrative of his relationship with the band.
Riley also infamously became known as The Beatles’ “wicked dentist” after allegedly spiking Lennon, Harrison, and their partners with LSD without their consent. Harrison later speculated that Riley had ulterior, inappropriate motives.
Riley’s death in a car crash in 1986 left many questions unanswered. While Brown’s book does not provide conclusive evidence, the revived allegations fuel discussions about the darker facets of The Beatles’ storied rise to fame, reminding fans of the shadows that often lurk behind stardom.
