During an interview, Shehbaz, the president of PML-N, emphasized the urgency of proceeding to elections in Pakistan. He warned that any delay in the polls would have disastrous consequences for the country and its democracy. Acknowledging that all parties have already started their election campaigns, Shehbaz insisted on nationwide polls without further postponement.
PML-N’s Achievements and Election Strategy
Shehbaz recalled the achievements of past governments under Nawaz Sharif, highlighting Pakistan’s transformation into a nuclear power. He credited the former coalition government, led by the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), for saving the country from default. He clarified that during his 16-month tenure as prime minister, the focus was solely on Pakistan’s survival, devoid of political agendas. Discussing election strategies, he revealed that Nawaz interviewed candidates and would be the party’s prime ministerial candidate. However, Shehbaz remained noncommittal about reclaiming his position as Punjab’s Chief Minister, stating that such decisions would be made post-election in consultation with Nawaz.
Party Slogan and Political Challenges
Addressing the PML-N’s popular slogan, “Vote Ko Izzat Do,” Shehbaz explained it symbolized a commitment to end load-shedding within five years. He commented on the legal troubles facing PTI and its leadership, suggesting Imran Khan might have avoided jail if not for the May 9 riots. He labelled the events of May 9 as a betrayal and conspiracy against the armed forces. Shehbaz also called for unity among stakeholders for the country’s betterment.
Upcoming Elections and PML-N’s Prospects
As the February 8 election date approaches, Shehbaz expressed confidence in PML-N’s potential success, hinting at a surprising outcome. He anticipates the party, under Nawaz’s leadership, to win enough seats to form the government. The return of Nawaz Sharif to Pakistan after a four-year exile is seen as a significant boost to the party, especially given its performance during the coalition government’s tenure. PML-N has fielded 208 candidates for the National Assembly’s 266 general seats and issued 671 tickets for the 859 seats across all five legislatures.
