Samsung has entered a multi-year partnership with Instacart, the US-based grocery delivery company, to enhance Samsung’s Bespoke Smart Refrigerator series by integrating a new artificial intelligence (AI) feature.
Designed to monitor the refrigerator’s inventory, this feature automatically adds items to the user’s Instacart account when supplies are low. Set for initial release in the 2025 smart refrigerator series, this feature will debut at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) this month.
Using AI to Simplify Grocery Shopping
Samsung’s announcement revealed that this innovative feature simplifies grocery shopping by enabling direct orders from the refrigerator’s screen. Initially available in the US, the 2025 Bespoke series will include screens that support this functionality.
The AI feature leverages Samsung and Instacart’s technological capabilities and will be incorporated into the 32-inch AI Family Hub and the 9-inch AI Home screen. Samsung’s AI Vision Inside will detect when specific groceries are depleting and use Instacart’s product-matching API to add these items to the user’s cart, allowing orders to be placed directly from the refrigerator.
Samsung also plans to extend this new Instacart feature to existing Bespoke refrigerators equipped with AI Family Hub screens through an over-the-network (OTN) update. However, the timeline for expanding to older models was not specified.
However, this feature has limitations. It will only function in areas where Instacart operates. The AI Vision Inside currently recognizes up to 37 food items, meaning additional items will need manual entry for names and expiration dates. Furthermore, the AI cannot identify items stored in refrigerator door bins or freezers.
