Today, educational institutions in Rawalpindi are observing the anniversary of the May 9, 2023, riots with a “Black Day” commemoration.
The riots erupted after the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan from a local court in Rawalpindi, resulting in attacks on military installations across Pakistan.
The govt initiated a crackdown on Khan and his party in response to these violent protests. In recognition of these events, the Pakistan Army has officially designated May 9 as “Black Day” to mark the anniversary and reflect on the consequences of the unrest.
The Rawalpindi district administration, in a notification, emphasized the day’s solemn observance to honour the armed forces and protect high-security assets. Various ceremonies at educational institutions will emphasize the significance of “Black Day.”
On Tuesday, DG ISPR Maj-Gen Ahmed Sharif clarified that reconciliation with PTI requires a public apology. In commenting on dialogue prospects, Maj Gen Chaudhry stated that no talks would occur with groups attacking the army or engaging in anti-army propaganda.
He emphasized that only political parties open to sincere dialogue and constructive politics would be considered for discussions. In response to another query, he noted that PTI received 31% of the votes in the February 8 elections and dismissed the notion that this vote share implied support for the May 9 attacks.
