The westerly weather system that caused heavy rainfall in the metropolis and southern Sindh dissipated by Sunday evening, shifting its path towards the north. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Karachi is anticipated to experience light showers on Monday.
Starting Tuesday, a new wave of cold is expected to hit the city, marking a significant shift in weather patterns. The PMD highlights the unusual intensity of February’s rainfall in Karachi, underscoring its rarity.
Record Rainfall and Temperature Drops
Karachi observed its highest rainfall within 24 hours at the PAF Base Faisal, reaching 81 mm. This downpour led to a notable decrease in temperature, with the maximum dropping by 4.3 degrees to 22 degrees Celsius. Following the heavy rains from Saturday night to Sunday morning, the city braced for another spell the following day.
Historical data recalls February 1979, when Karachi received 96mm of rain, and again in 1995, with 89.3mm recorded. The recent weather event saw the PAF Faisal Base recording 81 mm of rain, with the Old Airport weather station documenting 60 mm, highlighting a significant meteorological occurrence.
