President Joe Biden has announced ambitious plans for reforming the Supreme Court, a move aimed at counteracting the conservative majority that has influenced several recent landmark decisions.
Biden advocates for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling, supporting Donald Trump’s presidential immunity claims.
In addition to reversing this decision, Biden proposes term limits for Supreme Court justices, who currently hold their positions for life. This proposal comes in response to controversial decisions, including the overturning of the nationwide right to abortion.
In an upcoming speech in Austin, Texas, Biden will detail these plans further. He also pushed for a robust, enforceable ethics code for justices following recent scandals, reinforcing his commitment to these reforms during an Oval Office address. However, these proposals face significant obstacles in a deeply divided Congress and have little chance of passing.
Expressing his concerns in an opinion piece published Monday, Biden emphasized the foundational principle that no one is above the law, highlighting the abnormal situation undermining public confidence in the Supreme Court. These proposed reforms underscore Biden’s frustration with the court’s current composition and aim to prevent any presidency from having a prolonged influence on the judiciary.
The White House is optimistic about collaborating with Congress on these initiatives to ensure no single president can excessively influence the court for generations. Biden’s proposals include setting 18-year term limits for justices and appointing new justices every two years. Despite these efforts, legal experts say the likelihood of these reforms passing is minimal.
