The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) issued an advisory on Monday urging authorities to be vigilant in anticipation of potential Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) or flash floods that will likely affect the snow-covered and glaciated regions of Gilgit Baltistan (GB) and Chitral.
The PMD forecasts that GB and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa temperatures will be significantly higher than usual from May 21 to May 27, ranging from 4℃ to 6℃ above normal.
Gusty winds and thunderstorms at isolated locations may also occur during the period, further heightening the risk of GLOF or flash floods in these vulnerable areas.
Local district administrations, relevant organizations, and community groups in GB and Chitral are strongly encouraged to implement precautionary measures and remain on high alert to mitigate risks and prevent potential disasters.
