Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will chair a high level meeting later today to discuss strategies for eradicating polio from the country.
All four Chief Ministers, Prime Minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, Federal Defence Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Federal Information Minister Pervez Rasheed will be part of the meeting.
UNICEF, World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) officials will also attend the meeting.
International Monitoring Board has recommended UNICEF to toughen the travel restrictions on Pakistan due to the increasing polio cases in the country. It should be noted that Pakistan is amongst the only three countries of the world with ( an ever increasing number of) polio cases.
Polio teams have been consistently targeted during the immunization drives by extremist elements whereas parents are also reluctant to immunize their children from the virus.
