The Islamabad High Court (IHC) demanded the presence of Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, setting the date for his court appearance as next Monday. This directive emanated from Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani during the proceedings concerning the case of missing Baloch students.
Despite an adjournment request by the assistant attorney general, citing the attorney general’s absence, Justice Kayani opted to proceed. He articulated a stringent stance on enforced disappearances, suggesting the death penalty as a consequence for those found guilty.
Judicial Firmness on Enforced Disappearances
Justice Kayani’s pronouncements underscored the gravity with which the court views enforced disappearances, recommending the death penalty for perpetrators. The insistence on the caretaker Prime Minister’s in-person testimony on Monday by 10 am was to address potential charges against him.
Justice Kayani dismissed the advocate general’s attempts to secure additional time, reflecting the court’s resolve to expedite the case. This occasion marks the second summons for PM Kakar by the IHC, following a previous call to appear in November of the preceding year, which he could not attend due to being abroad.
