The Peshawar High Court (PHC) demanded written responses from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor Haji Ghulam Ali and the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding the date of the province’s upcoming general elections.
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) petition requesting a date for the KP Assembly elections was heard by a panel composed of Justices Ishtiaq Ibrahim and Syed Muhammad Attique Shah.
In addition, in court, PTI leaders Azam Swati, Asad Qaiser, Shibli Faraz, and Shah Farman were present. According to a petition the PTI filed with the court, elections must be held 90 days after the assembly is dissolved.
During the hearing, the court questioned the governor as to why he had not yet announced the election date.
According to the advocate general of the KP, the governor still has time to announce an election date by the Constitution, and the chief secretary has already submitted a response.
In response, Justice Ali ordered Governor Ali to respond to the letter the electoral body sent him requesting a date for the elections by Thursday.
The high court then inquired what would occur if the ECP did not receive the date today.
According to the PTI attorney, the governor only provides justifications and not a date.
The court postponed the hearing until Thursday after the issuance of notices.
