In a concerning update, disclosed on Tuesday that the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) predicts Pakistan’s gas reserves might decrease by 50% by 2027. The SSGC highlighted that gas consumption is on the rise as reserves dwindle. Emphasizing the urgency, the company recommended transitioning to RLNG from domestic gas sources.
Furthermore, the SSGC is exploring alternative energy solutions, including biogas, nitrogen production, and coal gasification, to fulfil the nation’s energy requirements.
In response to this looming energy crisis, the caretaker cabinet has approved the commencement of the Pak-Iran gas pipeline project, despite objections from the United States citing international sanctions on Iran.
This announcement follows a February decision by the caretaker government to increase gas tariffs nationwide. This adjustment was part of the conditions the International Monetary Fund (IMF) set. Tariffs for protected consumers rose by Rs 100 per mmbtu, while non-protected consumers faced a more significant increase of Rs 300 per mmbtu, according to reliable sources.
