Famed Pakistani actress Meera has received a 10-year entry ban to the United Kingdom from UK immigration officials.
Meera, whose real name is Syeda Irtiza Rubab, claims a misunderstanding during an English language interview at Heathrow Airport over ten years ago led to an unjust ban. Pakistan’s local news channel, GEO News, reported that officials enforced the ban because Meera could not communicate with an immigration officer. She confused “transit” with “transaction” and failed to provide her mother’s full name during the interview.
Meera’s mother, Shafqat Zahra Bukhari, remarked on her limited English proficiency. However, after spending ten years in the United States, Meera speaks English fluently. Despite her improved language skills, the UK had already imposed the ban, limiting her travel and opportunities there.
Recently, after the ban lifted, Meera’s travel agent applied for a UK visit visa on her behalf, but officials rejected the application due to “false representation” of facts caused by errors in the form. Meera told Geo News that she plans to reapply for the visa soon and will ensure the accuracy of all details this time.
Meera’s family has appealed to the UK High Commission in Pakistan to grant her a visa. Her younger sister lives in Germany, while her youngest, a qualified solicitor, lives in London. Meera’s mother primarily lives in London in a house purchased with Meera’s earnings, which the actor intended to use during her visits.
Speaking to the media, Meera’s mother emphasized the importance of her daughter’s work in the UK. “Meera should be allowed to enter the UK. There are several film projects she plans to do in the UK. These projects are on hold because Meera has a central role, and these can only be completed when she is in the UK,” she said.
She also appealed to the UK High Commissioner, stating, “Meera is a celebrity artist and a global star. She travels the world for shooting. She is working on a film with Shaan, which can only be filmed in London. I appeal to the UK government to issue her the visa.”
Meera’s mother highlighted her daughter’s intelligence and ability to stay in the limelight. “Meera knows the art of staying in the media. She likes controversy and says things that are relevant and viral. She is the breadwinner of the family and takes care of everyone,” she said.
Despite the challenges, Meera remains a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. Her mother added, “She is the kindest person you will meet. Allah has given her a lot and made us prosperous.”
Meera has engaged a new attorney to help with her visa application, and is resolved to address the issue. With several film and drama projects on hold, her ability to travel to the UK is crucial for her career and family.
