Shazia Marri, minister for the alleviation of poverty and social safety and the chairwoman of the Benazir Income Support Program (BISP), called on the International Community to make significant efforts toward resolving challenges relating to climate change.
While speaking at the 26th Socialist International Congress in Madrid, Spain. Mari stated that 33 million people in Pakistan had been affected by the devastating floods this year, leaving 650,000 pregnant women and four million children severely affected by the worst rains and floods in the country’s history due to climate change. The minister also stated that this year’s floods are the worst in the country’s history.
According to Marri, who was recently elected to the position of vice president of Socialist International Women for the Asia Pacific area, the most significant danger that faces the world and the people who live in it is climate change.
She said that the recent flooding in Pakistan caused by the monsoons is the most recent illustration of the devastation climate change has caused to Pakistan’s population, economy, and infrastructure.
During the event, the minister voiced his hope that the world community will shortly take some measures seriously to stop the destruction caused by climate change.
