Pakistan confirmed its first Mpox case of 2025, as the Ministry of Health reported. Health officials identified the patient through a screening process at Peshawar Airport after they returned from Dubai on January 24.
After testing positive, health authorities promptly moved the patient to Services Hospital Peshawar for treatment. The Ministry of Health has reiterated its commitment to enforcing effective measures to curb the spread of Mpox. The patient’s recent travels to Gulf countries have heightened concerns about the potential for further virus transmission.
In a related incident, Javed Ahmed, arriving from Sharjah, showed symptoms of Mpox during a medical screening at Karachi airport. Originally from Rajanpur, authorities immediately isolated Ahmed as a precautionary measure. Medical authorities urgently treat the situation and apply strict precautions to manage these cases effectively.
Understanding Mpox
Mpox is a viral disease caused by the Mpox virus and continues to pose a global health concern. Although the exact natural reservoir of the virus remains unknown, experts suspect that African rodents and non-human primates may harbour the virus and could transmit it to humans.

The disease typically begins with a fever and progresses to a rash on the face, spreading to other body parts. Additional symptoms may include headaches, muscle aches, exhaustion, and swollen lymph nodes. The incubation period for Mpox varies from 5 to 21 days, and the illness usually lasts between two to four weeks.
The Ministry of Health urges the public to stay vigilant about Mpox symptoms and report any suspected cases to health authorities immediately. With rigorous monitoring at points of entry and comprehensive case management, Pakistan is taking proactive steps to prevent the spread of this disease effectively.
