The first Hangor-class submarine constructed for the Pakistan Navy was launched at a ceremony in Wuhan, China.
The ceremony was held at the Wuchang Shipbuilding Industry Group’s (WSIG) Shuangliu Base and featured Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Admiral Naveed Ashraf as a key attendee.
During his address, Admiral Ashraf underscored the critical role of maritime security in the region’s current geo-strategic climate. He affirmed the Pakistan Navy’s dedication to fostering a safe and conducive maritime environment.
Admiral Ashraf noted that the Hangor-class submarines, equipped with advanced weapons and sensors, are expected to contribute significantly to regional peace and stability.
He commended the efforts of China Shipbuilding and Offshore International Company Ltd (CSOC) on their commitment to the project, expressing satisfaction with its progress. He remarked that this project would enhance the long-standing friendship between Pakistan and China.
The agreement for eight Hangor-class submarines was signed with CSOC during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to Pakistan. The contract stipulates that four submarines will be constructed in China and the other four in Pakistan at Karachi Shipyard & Engineering Works Ltd (KS&EW), incorporating a Transfer of Technology (ToT).
These submarines will feature sophisticated weapons and sensors, enabling them to engage long-range targets.
The ceremony drew high-ranking officials from Pakistan and China, including representatives from WSIG and CSOC.
The first type 039B Hangor Class submarine induction follows the Pakistan Navy’s recent induction of two Chinese-built Type 054 A/P frigates last year.
