The Ministry for Federal Education and Professional Training in Pakistan has introduced the ‘Each One Teaches One’ (EOTO) initiative as part of the Prime Minister’s Roshan Pakistan National Literacy Drive.
The initiative, directed by Federal Minister for Education Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, will be implemented with support from the National Commission for Human Development (NCHD).
Aiming to reduce illiteracy, the program seeks to engage students from educational institutions across the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) to act as literacy teachers. According to a recent press release, the initiative will involve 185 educational institutions, including 150 schools and 35 colleges, contributing around 1,932 students in its first phase. These students from grades 9 and upwards will teach 66,759 illiterate individuals within their communities.
The teaching structure is tiered by educational level: students in Grades 9-12 will each teach one learner; graduate students will teach two; and postgraduates will teach three. The curriculum, approved by the Ministry of Education, spans 12 weeks and includes materials on Urdu and math, supplemented by a teacher’s guide. Participating students are incentivized with 10 extra marks in their academic records.
The EOTO initiative plans biannual rollouts in all educational institutions across ICT. Participants who complete the course will receive literacy certificates from the NCHD, and the newly literate will gain facilitated access to essential documents such as CNICs and passports at no cost.
Additionally, focal persons and teachers will receive specialized training from the NCHD to enhance their effectiveness as literacy educators. Each student will receive a literacy kit to aid in teaching, and regular assessments will track learner progress.
The ‘Each One Teaches One’ initiative is poised for expansion into Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Plans are to incorporate additional educational institutions governed by the Federal Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education (FBISE).
