Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, the spokesperson for Pakistan’s Foreign Office, addressed inquiries regarding the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights statement about the general elections slated for February 8, 2024.
Baloch reiterated Pakistan’s resolve to ensure fundamental freedoms and a democratic process, emphasizing the nation’s dedication to an inclusive democracy, the rule of law, and safeguarding human rights as enshrined in its laws and Constitution. She assured that extensive security measures are in place to facilitate the smooth execution of the electoral process, highlighting the integrity of Pakistan’s judicial system in offering fair trial and due process.
UN High Commissioner Raises Concerns
The remarks from Pakistan’s FO came in response to criticisms from the UN human rights body, which denounced the alleged harassment and detentions of political leaders, particularly from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, ahead of the elections. Liz Throssell, speaking for the UN High Commissioner, called on Pakistani authorities to ensure a free and fair vote, condemning violence against political entities and advocating for the protection of fundamental freedoms.
The UN High Commissioner’s office expressed concerns over the treatment of PTI leaders and supporters, the legal challenges against Imran Khan, and the participation barriers faced by women and minority communities, including the Ahmadis. The international call focuses on ensuring fair competition among parties and upholding the constitutional rights of all citizens, pointing out the need for a democratic environment that fosters a wide range of human rights.
