The Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) is embarking on an ambitious plan to elevate Skardu Airport to international standards, underscoring its commitment to boost tourism.
CAA Director General Khaqan Murtaza, in a conversation with ARY News, shared the strategic intent behind this decision. He disclosed introducing an open sky policy for Skardu Airport to attract more tourists to the northern regions year-round. Recently, Saudi aviation officials, taken aback by the enchanting beauty of the northern region during their visit, expressed keen interest in commencing direct flights to Skardu.
Facilities and Historical Significance
Skardu Airport’s upgrade includes enhanced refuelling facilities for planes. Additionally, initiatives are in progress to augment oil storage capacities for aircraft in these areas. Historically significant, Skardu proudly received its international airport designation by successfully landing the inaugural international flight of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) in August 2023. Celebrating this milestone, passengers aboard PIA Flight 234 from Dubai were greeted with traditional Gilgit-Baltistan caps and memorable gifts. The aircraft’s arrival was honoured with a water cannon salute, marking the moment’s significance.
