Following a terrorist attack in Bisham, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which tragically resulted in the death of five Chinese nationals, the Government of Pakistan has announced a compensation plan of approximately 700 million PKR will be paid to the families of the deceased.
Pakistani officials plan to visit Beijing next month to discuss cooperation across various sectors further and initiate the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). It has been directed that the compensation for the Chinese victims be expedited.
In response to this incident, the Chinese government has called for a comprehensive investigation and improved security measures for its citizens working in Pakistan. This attack targeted a bus transporting workers to the Dasu Hydropower Project. The Pakistani government has strongly condemned the attack and reassured China of its commitment to bring those responsible to justice.
On March 26, 2024, the Pakistani government further announced a compensation package of $2.58 million for the families of the six Chinese workers killed in the latest incident. This package is awaiting approval by the Economic Coordination Committee.
The workers were involved with the Dasu Hydropower Project, a significant development supported by the World Bank designed to generate 4,320 megawatts of power once completed. However, the project has faced multiple terrorist attacks. The first attack on July 14, 2021, resulted in the death of 10 Chinese workers and injured 20 others. A subsequent attack this year claimed the lives of six Chinese workers and one Pakistani.
