The Paiya Jam Harta initiated by the Public Action Committee in Azad Kashmir has persisted into its third day, prompting security measures, including the deployment of Rangers, to manage escalating tensions. Additionally, the authorities have suspended internet and mobile services across the region.
Dawn News reports that the strike has led to widespread closures of business centres and shops, with disruptions in communication services continuing as protestors march towards Muzaffarabad from various cities.
In response to the growing unrest, many army and Rangers personnel have been stationed in strategic locations such as Kohala and Poonch, among other districts in Azad Kashmir.
The central leadership of the Joint Action Committee has publicly distanced itself from any violent acts occurring during the strike. To address the underlying causes of the protests, the Prime Minister of Azad Kashmir has announced forthcoming relief in electricity and flour prices within the region. He has also extended an invitation for dialogue to the Public Action Committee’s representatives.
Furthermore, President Asif Ali Zardari has convened an emergency meeting to deliberate on the ongoing situation in Azad Kashmir, seeking effective strategies to restore stability and address the protestors’ grievances.
