Muhammad Nooh Dastgir Butt, a distinguished weightlifter from Gujranwala, Pakistan, clinched a gold medal at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Despite his remarkable achievement, his journey has been fraught with challenges, particularly with the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation.

Following his victory at the Commonwealth Games, the Weightlifting Federation demanded recognition in every interview, insisting on being credited for his success. However, Nooh Dastgir Butt attributes the core of his achievements to his father’s relentless support and training. His father’s dedication was instrumental in his development and success, overshadowing the federation’s role, which Nooh felt was minimal.

Compounding his frustrations, the federation’s support did not extend to essential opportunities that could have furthered his career. Despite his proven track record, Nooh was not selected for the Olympic qualifiers, an essential step for any athlete aiming for the Olympics. Furthermore, he was denied a scholarship designated for Olympic preparation, which would have provided him with crucial resources to compete internationally. He was also excluded from participating in the Asian Games, limiting his exposure and experience on significant international platforms.

The decisions by the federation have not only impacted Nooh Dastgir Butt’s career trajectory but also highlighted an alarming gap between the athlete’s contributions and the administrative support he received. Nooh’s case underscores the challenges athletes often face from governing bodies, which can sometimes hinder rather than foster their athletic progression.
