Nestlé is set to launch a new product line in the United States, including a $5 range of frozen pizzas and protein-enriched pasta.
Nestlé ‘s products are specifically tailored for individuals using popular weight loss drugs like Wegovy or Ozempic, known as GLP-1 agonists. Tom Moe, president of Nestlé USA’s meal division, announced that these offerings will be marketed under Vital Pursuit. The brand aims to provide “food solutions” that complement the drug regimen with high protein, good fibre, and essential minerals like potassium and vitamin C.
Scheduled to hit supermarket shelves in October, these items are slightly pricier than Nestlé’s standard offerings, such as the DiGiorno four-cheese personal pan pizza currently selling at Target for $4.79. Nestlé, renowned for its diverse product range, including KitKat and Nescafe, initiated the development of these companion products last year.
The company’s move responds to concerns that the growing use of GLP-1 drugs could potentially reduce demand for traditional food products. CEO Mark Schneider expressed that Nestlé aims to mitigate potential muscle mass loss among users with these new products, alongside monitoring drug usage trends.
Investors are concerned that appetite-suppressing drugs might negatively impact food sales. However, Nestlé and other food companies see this as an opportunity to introduce products that cater specifically to the needs of GLP-1 drug users. According to Goldman Sachs, the usage of these drugs could expand significantly, potentially affecting millions of U.S. consumers in the coming years.
Nestlé has consulted with individuals on these medications to tailor the meals, which will soon be available for sampling. The brand has been introduced to major retailers, including Walmart, Kroger, and Target. The new line is designed not just to address the loss of appetite seen in drug users but also to provide essential nutrients like protein, which can be lacking due to side effects such as nausea and aversions to certain food textures.
Nutrition experts underscore the importance of adequate protein intake for those on GLP-1 medications due to the risk of muscle mass loss as patients lose weight. This new product range from Nestlé, distinct from traditional diet foods, focuses on simple flavours and nutrient-rich profiles to appeal to modern dietary needs.
