Following the implementation of the new budget, packaged milk prices in Pakistan have seen a substantial increase, creating affordability challenges for ordinary citizens.
A recent Bloomberg report indicates that the price of packaged milk in Pakistan now exceeds that in many other countries. Specifically, the price per litre has surged to 370 PKR, compared to 342 PKR in Paris, France, and 358 PKR in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Australia’s per-liter price stands at 300 PKR, underscoring Pakistan’s higher rates.
The report also highlights a critical health concern: over 60% of Pakistani children under five are suffering from various anemia-related diseases. The significant rise in milk prices further jeopardizes the health of these vulnerable children.
The federal government has recently levied an 18% General Sales Tax on packaged milk as part of this fiscal year’s budget measures, leading to price hikes across various brands. As a result, consumers are now paying an additional 50 PKR per litre of milk.
