Mike Tyson will return to the ring this Friday in a Netflix-backed boxing match against 27-year-old YouTuber Jake Paul at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The event, taking place nearly 40 years after Tyson’s professional debut and 19 years after his retirement, has sparked significant controversy due to concerns about his age and potential for injury.
The bout, consisting of eight two-minute rounds, had to be postponed from July to May after Tyson needed medical attention for a bleeding ulcer during a flight. This incident has fueled the arguments of many critics who view the upcoming fight as dangerously irresponsible.

Prominent British fight promoter Eddie Hearn strongly opposes Tyson’s return to the ring. “Twenty years ago, Mike Tyson retired from boxing, completely worn out,” Hearn remarked. “If you think he should be fighting at his age, you’re either devoid of any emotional connection to the man or completely misguided. It shouldn’t be happening.”
Another leading promoter, Frank Warren, shared similar concerns: “Mike Tyson is 58 years old, and he shouldn’t be fighting. It’s as simple as that.”
Despite the widespread criticism and concern for his well-being, Tyson remains unfazed and confident, dismissing the critiques as driven by envy. “I’m beautiful, that’s all I can say,” Tyson expressed earlier this year. “The people who said that wish they were up here. No one else can do this.”
During an open workout in Texas this week, Tyson shared that his intensive training camp reinforced his self-belief. “When I agreed to this fight and started training, I questioned my sanity,” he said. “But now, the hard work is done. The fight is the party.”
At a final press conference on Wednesday, Tyson maintained a serious demeanour and kept his comments brief, simply stating, “I’m just ready to fight. I’m looking forward to it.”
Jake Paul, known for his initial fame as a YouTuber and subsequent boxing matches against various non-traditional opponents, has won 10 of his 11 fights, with seven coming by knockout. “I feel really good, sharp, powerful, and explosive. It will be a short night for Mike,” Paul predicted at the workout.
Legendary boxing promoter Bob Arum, at 92 years old, doubts Tyson’s ability to perform effectively at his age. “A 58-year-old cannot fight effectively, despite their past skills or athleticism. I hope Mike doesn’t get hurt, but I give him no chance,” Arum stated.
