Lieutenant General Muhammad Asim Malik, adjutant general at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, has been named the new Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief.
According to an announcement by Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR) on Monday, Lt Gen Malik will assume his new role as the country’s spymaster on September 30. He will take over from Lt Gen Nadeem Anjum, who was appointed in 2021 by then-Prime Minister Imran Khan.
Before his new appointment, Gen Malik held various significant military positions. He was promoted to lieutenant general in October 2021, during which he also took on the role of the army’s adjutant general. His military career includes commanding an infantry brigade in Waziristan and serving in the Balochistan infantry division. Notably, Gen Malik has been recognized for his leadership and excellence, being awarded a Sword of Honour during his course.
Additionally, Gen Malik has a robust academic background, including serving as the chief instructor at the National Defence University in Islamabad and an instructor at the Command and Staff College Quetta. He is also a graduate of Fort Leavenworth in the United States and the Royal College of Defence Studies in London.
Gen Anjum, whom Gen Malik replaces, has had a distinguished career. He was commissioned in September 1988 and has held positions such as Corps V commander in Karachi and commandant of the Command and Staff College in Quetta. Before becoming the Karachi corps commander in December 2020, he led a brigade in Kurram Agency and the Frontier Corps (North) in Balochistan.
