Lionel Messi, currently with Inter Miami, expressed his disappointment at missing last Sunday’s friendly match in Hong Kong as his absence sparked discontent among fans.
Reporting to CNN, Messi revealed his injury prevented him from participating in the game, a regrettable situation. “I couldn’t be in the Hong Kong game, and it’s a shame because I always aim to play. I want to be present, especially for games that attract much anticipation and for which we travel great distances,” Messi told journalists.
The friendly match in Hong Kong, part of Inter Miami’s preseason tour, attracted a sellout crowd of 40,000. However, the absence of the 36-year-old football icon, who has clinched the Ballon d’Or eight times, led to fans voicing their displeasure through boos and calls for refunds.
The Hong Kong government also expressed its dissatisfaction over Messi’s non-participation. Inter Miami’s manager, Gerardo “Tata” Martino, later clarified that Messi and Luis Suárez were sidelined based on medical staff recommendations.
Currently in Tokyo for the subsequent phase of their preseason tour, Inter Miami is scheduled to play against Vissel Kobe. Messi acknowledged the fans’ frustration over his absence in Hong Kong but expressed hope for a future opportunity to play there.
Messi shared his uncertainty about participating in the upcoming match against Vissel Kobe, stating, “If I’m honest, I still don’t know if I can play or not, but I’m feeling much better and eager to participate.”
