The Lahore High Court (LHC) dismissed more than 3,000 petitions filed against the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s (NEPRA) mandate to collect fuel adjustment charges (FDA) in electricity bills.
The LHC announced its verdict on Monday, outlawing NEPRA’s law, which allows the authority to collect FDA fees from electricity users.
The petition was filed last year by Munir Ahmed and others. The petition highlighted that the government was collecting tens of millions of rupees from citizens due to fuel adjustment costs.
In September 2022, the LHC requested the federal government’s response to a petition filed against the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority’s mandate to collect fuel adjustment charges in electricity bills.
At the hearing on 16 September, the petitioner’s lawyer, Attorney Azhar Siddiqui, challenged the authority of the electricity regulator, stating that it was not comprehensive. The lawyer added that NEPRA could only issue warrants if it had full authority.
