Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah urged that the law passed by the Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) government to extend the mandate of the army chief staff be repealed.
In an interview with a private television station, Sanaullah stated that the legislation would continue to worry future army chiefs.
Referring to the process for appointing Pakistan’s chief justice, the interior minister emphasized the necessity of developing a formula for the appointment of the COAS. He believed that the most senior officer should be nominated as the future army chief using a mechanism similar to the legal system.
“The prime minister has discretion over the nomination of the army chief,” he added, adding that the prime minister should engage with all relevant parties.
In the coming days, the prime minister will reveal the new COAS, according to the interior minister.
In response to a question regarding disagreements between Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz regarding the next army chief, the interior minister referred to the stories as rumors. Should be nullified
