The Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) government has expanded its Sehat Card Plus programme to include free kidney, liver, and bone marrow transplants and cochlear implants, announced on April 20, 2025.
The decision in a meeting led by Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur represents a significant advancement in improving healthcare access. Plans are also underway to include drug rehabilitation services soon.
The Sehat Card Plus programme, a Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) flagship initiative, fully funds three critical transplant procedures and cochlear implants, removing financial barriers for eligible citizens. Provincial Information Adviser Barrister Muhammad Ali Saif hailed the move as “revolutionary,” aligning with PTI’s healthcare vision. “These services will be provided completely free of cost,” Saif stated, emphasising accessibility.
The provincial health department has been directed to implement the changes immediately. Additionally, the government is preparing to include drug rehabilitation services under the programme, addressing a growing public health need in K-P.
In a related development, the K-P government approved regulations for medical, research, and industrial use of cannabis plants, signalling progressive health policy reforms, as noted by ARY News. The Sehat Card Plus introduced free Outpatient Department (OPD) services, launched by Chief Minister Gandapur in Mardan as a pilot project benefiting 50,000 deserving households, based on Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) data.
