Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has become the first province to approve an action plan to implement the multinational environmental action plan.
Chief Minister Mahmood Khan authorized the strategy to perform steps necessary under several MEAs signed by the federal government, with clear roles established for both federal and provincial organizations.
Pakistan signed MEAs on biological diversity, migratory species conservation, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, transboundary hazardous waste movements and disposal, and persistent organic pollutants.
The provincial administration developed an ‘action plan’ to implement MEAs while ‘framing’ the Climate Change Policy and Action Plan, 2022.
According to a senior official, KP is the first province to develop an ‘action plan’ for implementing MEAs.
The action plan contained 167 tasks under 15 MEAs, including legislative gap identification, capacity building, arrangements for regulatory regimes, communication and advocacy, and implementation.
