Nike and Vanessa Bryant, Kobe Bryant’s widow, have collaborated to release the Protro 8 sneaker, a homage to the late basketball legend. Just a day after Vanessa teased fans by showcasing a silhouette of the shoes on her social media channels, the sportswear giant unveiled the “Halo” design to the public.
Significance Behind the Design
Aimed to commemorate Kobe’s upcoming 45th birthday on August 23, Vanessa played an integral role in the shoe’s design. The Protro 8 is a revamped version of Kobe’s eighth signature shoe, first launched in 2012. This release marks the second from Kobe’s collection (following the Kobe 4 Protro “Mamabacitas” in May) after the Bryants mended ties with Nike the previous year.
The Journey with Nike
It’s worth noting the background between the Bryant family and Nike. The initial contract between Kobe and Nike lapsed in April 2021, as the two parties couldn’t finalize a renewed long-term agreement. However, negotiations between Vanessa and Nike executives led to a fruitful outcome, ensuring Kobe’s legacy remains accessible to his vast fanbase. Vanessa hinted, “This will be one of many Kobe 8 ‘Halo’ styles coming soon.”
As for the sneaker enthusiasts eager to own a pair, the “Halo” sneakers will be up for grabs on Nike’s app come August 23, with prices ranging from $80 (for kids) to $180 (for men).
