Khalid Hussain Baath, the central chairman of Kissan Ittehad (Farmers’ Union), has declared plans for widespread protests across Punjab due to unresolved grievances with the provincial government.
Baath expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of direct negotiations, stating that the union was directed to discuss matters with a secretary, a proposal they have declined. “We were told to meet with the secretary for negotiations, but we will not meet with the secretary,” Baath stated.
In response, Baath has called for mobilization, with farmers set to demonstrate at various levels throughout Punjab, including district and tehsil areas. “Farmers will take to the streets with their wheat crops, tractors, and children. There will be protests on every major highway in Punjab, where the farmers will sit in,” he explained.
Addressing Maryam Nawaz directly, Baath emphasized the farmers’ demand for rights over charity. “Do not give us charity; give us our rights,” he asserted. He also warned of escalating the protests further if their demands remain unaddressed.
Baath highlighted the pressing urge among farmers across Pakistan to protest due to their adverse conditions, cautioning that the situation could become uncontrollable if it escalates. He also referenced recent violence against farmers at GPO Chowk, condemning it as deplorable and affirming the farmers’ commitment to peaceful protest. “Although the farmers have the spirit to react strongly, they are peaceful and will remain so,” Baath noted.
In a poignant reminder of the farmers’ integral role in society, Baath concluded, “Every person working in any department is a son of a farmer; if they want to inflict violence on us, then let them.” This statement underscores the deep-rooted connections between the agricultural community and broader societal structures in Pakistan.
